What is in your third drawer down? - Nicola Olds

What is in your third drawer down?

What is in your third drawer down?

What’s in your third drawer down? Perhaps it’s time to dump the contents.
Nicola describes herself as a picture-orientated person who “reframes problems in visual terms.”

There are three messages from popular culture that resonate for me and are helpful for anyone looking to make changes in their lives. First, in the words of Dr Phil: “You cannot change what you don’t acknowledge.” Second, the lyrics of the chorus of Kenny Rogers’ “The Gambler” – Knowing when to hold them or fold them or when to walk away! These well-known directives from Phil and Kenny may sound simplistic, but I believe, change starts with getting to the nub of the problem, then deciding on the right course of action. Two steps I can support people with.

For me, the song “The Third Drawer Down”, by Irish comedian Jimeoin, paints a vivid (yet messy) picture we can all relate to. So, what’s in Jimeoin’s third drawer down and how does it relate to sorting out our problems?

Basically, the third drawer down contains a bunch of random stuff, including “things you think’ll come in handy” and “things that are broken you know you’ll never fix.” Stuff like elastic bands or the single chopstick.

Making a change in your life starts with “admitting you have a third drawer down” – realising you hold onto things you really ought to dump or relocate to another drawer. Working with people, I invite them to “dump everything.” From there, I love assisting people make sense of their issues and get their priorities in order.
